Green Painting Tips:

Take extra measures to ensure your painting project is an environmentally safe experience. The best quality acrylic paints are products that contain low or no volatile organic compounds (otherwise known as VOCs). These products reduce the emissions of VOCs into the home which improves indoor air quality and reduces urban smog. Check the labels on the cans for LEED certification to ensure you are using a low VOC product. LEED certified products are considered "green" or "environmentally-friendly."

Following are tips for "green" painting:

(1) Use all the paint!

When possible, use every ounce of paint you buy. The extra coat will provide walls with more protection. Or, ask a friend, family member, or neighbor if they could use some extra paint for a small project.

(2) Seal it tightly!

Any unused paint should be stored in tightly sealed cans and placed upside down to help maintain the seal. Don't pour leftover paint down the drain.

(3) Dispose of paint properly!

To dispose of paint, convert it to a solid waste then dispose of it with your regular trash. To convert it to a solid waste, remove the lid to allow the water or solvents to evaporate. Do this in an area where children cannot tamper with it.

Hold off on cleaning tools immediately.

For projects that will take more than a day to complete, try wrapping your tools in a plastic bag for reuse instead of cleaning them at the end of each day. The tools will last overnight or even a few days if kept out of the sun.

(4) Scrape the paint!

Upon completion of your project, scrape any excess paint from the can, latex rollers and brushes with a stir stick or wall scraper. Doing so prior to washing will make them easier to clean and is easier on the environment. When washing equipment, be sure to do so in a sink or similar drain so it is treated instead of ending up in the ground and in our drinking water.

(5) Use quality water-based acrylic-latex paints!

Pure acrylic latex paints are more environmentally-friendly since they contain low levels of solvents. If using a water-based paint over an old solvent-based paint, be sure to follow the instructions for surface preparation which generally involves a good cleaning and a light sanding.

Estimation: How does it work?

In this section I want to educate you on the estimation process. It is important that you know that cheap is not always good. We are always looking to save where we can but if you are more concern about getting a quality job you need to know how a paint contractor arrive at his price.

http://www.merchantcircle.com/business/Elite.Painting.

You estimate a paint job by deciding what kind of estimate you want. The least accurate estimate is a wild guess; the next method is not quite as inaccurate but still is quite inaccurate, this is the square foot method. This method seems accurate because it uses some mathematics in the way of a simple formula. Square footage times some variable such as square footage x $2.50 per square foot. This is still a very inaccurate method because it doesn't allow for any variations. And there are plenty of variations between houses; all home painting estimates cannot be reduced to a square foot equation.

The most accurate therefore the best method of estimating a job is the detailed "take off" estimate. This estimate counts individual items and calculates the price of a paint project based on individual line items. This method attempts to put exact prices on individual items based on historic job costs from the company's records.

So we take the time it takes to paint an item and multiplies this time by the hourly rate that the company has calculated for itself; this is not the "going rate" or some arbitrary rate decided on by a builder, a paint store clerk or your Aunt Martha. This hourly rate is calculated on an individual basis from the company's fixed overhead and variable overhead (job costs). This is the only true method of estimating which tells a company what they need to charge in order to make money and stay in business.

Construction service businesses have one of the highest rates of failure in this country and the single biggest reason why construction companies fail is not making enough money. Many construction service companies like a painting company confuse having lots of work with being successful. In other words, these companies have plenty of work but are not making enough money to stay in business.

Why are they not making enough money?

They either don't estimate the paint job correctly, or they lower their price to get the job.

Recommended Retail Paint Companies:

Sherwin Williams
Is what I consider to be the best product in the industry, the history of manufacturing  paint products to the best degree possible has always been the aim of this company.

In 1877, Sherwin-Williams & Company developed the first patented reclosable paint can. This revolutionized the way paint could be used, and more importantly, reused over a period of time. During the 1880s the company continued to develop new products for the paint industry. At the beginning of the decade it improved its liquid paint formula. After two years of test marketing under the Osborn label, it introduced SWP--Sherwin-Williams Paint--the first mixed paint to receive considerable public acceptance.

Sherwin Williams is currently offering a discount on their new product line. You can visit the site below to down load a coupon and seek other discounted prices.

Behr is another paint that I would recommend, they have an excellent product. The application of this product is wonderful. Very easy to work with and lays very well on any surface. I recently finish The painting of The Sanctuary at Sedona:  http://thesanctuaryatsedona.ning.com/ where I used it to paint the interior(10,000 sq ft & 30,000 sq ft) of the exterior. I also used Kilz primer which is the best primer the industry have to offer, It hides and spreads very well on all surfaces, be it new drywall, stucco or wood surfaces. Behr or Kilz  can be purchase at any Home Depot through out Arizona.

Behr has a new product call Fresh Aire which is a green product, to get more on this product  visit:

Behr is a manufacturer of interior and exterior residential paint, founded in 1947 by Otho Behr Jr. It is known for their extensive range of available colors (over 1800 colors are represented in their paint swatches and samples with over 4000 colors available overall). The company is based in Santa Ana, California. Home Depot is the exclusive retailer of Behr paint.
Behr is pronounced like the animal "bear" and its logo includes the outline of a bear.
Behr Process Corporation was created by Otho M. Behr. Upon his death his son Otho Jr. ran the company until Jack Croul eventually took over. In 1999 Behr was purchased by the Masco Corporation.

FYI: It is always a good idea to consult your H.O.A. if you have one. Usually they specify what colors you can apply to your home. If this is your situation you can save your self a lot of time and headaches.

FYI: Another time saver available to you is the new technology available at Behr.com where you can create your color scheme on their website and get a good idea of what your colors will look like before you apply it to your home.
